I can’t tell you how many people, including myself, regret updates that they made to their house before they fully appreciated the details. You will also quickly discover what works and what doesn’t. You will begin to appreciate the functionality, special features, and details. Live or spend quality time in your new home awhile before starting work. I hope that sharing my hard-earned knowledge will help you find your own Mid Mod style. I have come up with these thoughts after making many mistakes myself over the years. Mid-Century modern has its own look and it will keep its value if you follow these simple rules. Forget what you see on HGTV/Martha Stewart/Oprah. If you are the new owner of a Mid-Century Modern home, congratulations! Now to the hard part… how to get the look you love. In general, almost all of the tables had some damage to their tabletops and to the bottoms of their legs (where a chair would typically hit the side of the table). Signs of wear: We looked for nicks and scratches on the surfaces of the floor-model tables as an indication of how they would perform under serious use in the home.We found that the smaller the apron (the framing that connects the tabletop to the legs), the more clearance we had to cross our legs and move around. We wanted to make sure that we could sit easily and comfortably and cross our legs underneath each table. Comfort: We sat at each table to determine its comfort.(All of the tables within our sub-$1,000 budget were held together with hardware, versus the traditional tongue-and-groove wood construction you might find in models at higher prices.) Stability and construction: We tried to shake, lift, and move the tables to gauge their quality.Many seemed bigger and darker than they did online-something to consider if you’re decorating a smaller space. Looks: We judged the tables for their overall appearance and compared with how they looked online.One person was able to put it together in around 15 minutes. We found the Damen easy to assemble-we just needed to attach the legs. You could tone down the country-kitchen look by using more-modern chairs or, down the line, painting the table it also comes in an unpainted version. The narrow, widely spaced legs offer maximum seating capacity. The piece’s small scale helps it work well for an apartment, as a kitchen table, or even as a desk or craft table. The oak tabletop on this model should be more durable than the pine that IKEA uses on its solid-wood tables (although it will still dent and scratch easily).
